The idea of an earthly paradise has long intrigued artists, and the concept gained renewed vigor at the turn of the tumultuous 20th century in France. Focusing on three masterpieces—Cézanne's Large Bathers, Matisse's Bathers by a River, and Gauguin's Where Do We Come From? What are We? Where are We Going?—this exhibition catalog follows the image of Arcadia from the poetry of Virgil through the landscapes of Corot and Poussin down to the conceptual art of the present day. The book features nearly 200 color reproductions of other works by these artists, as well as related paintings by Pablo Picasso, Puvis de Chavannes, Franz Marc, and Henri Rousseau.
