In the aftermath of their revolution, the French public turned to British history as a way of making sense of its recent past. French artist Paul Delaroche was particularly inspired by English subjects; his monumental work The Execution of Lady Jane Grey entranced French viewers, and remains today among the most popular paintings in Britain's National Gallery.
