From January 1 to December 31, 2003, whenever he was at his Malibu home, photographer Robert Weingarten would step onto his balcony and, at 6:30 every morning, capture the same subject—the sea, sky, and landscape of Santa Monica Bay, toward Los Angeles International Airport—with the same camera, lens, and film. All that changed from day to day was the exposure time and the air itself, creating a wildly varying series of images ranging from fiery reds and misty blues to streaks of pastel shades, from sharply silhouetted skylines and illuminated windows on the thin strip of the far shore to pure abstractions of luminous color.
