The first edition of Frankenstein; or, The Modem Prometheus was published anonymously in London in 1818, when Mary Shelley was only 21 years old. The novel, which is infused with some elements of the Gothic novel and the Romantic Movement, had so great an influence since its publication that the word "Frankenstein" is stili commonly used to mean a creation that destroys his creator.
