For Flannery O’Connor, the grotesque involves unaccustomed events that are out of the ordinary, excluding any possibility of realism. However, she believes that the grotesque perception occurs in process of reception; every piece of writing in the South is deemed grotesque by the Northern readers. The focus in her fiction is on the physical, intellectual, moral, and ethical defects in society, and the solution she proposes is coherent with her worldview.
