Barış BahçeciInternational Symposium on the Legal Aspects of the Treaty of Lausanne The Allied Powers, who won World War I, largely determined the future of the defeated Central Powers at the Paris Peace Conference they convened in 1919. They prepared the St. Germain Treaty for Austria, the Neuilly Treaty for Bulgaria, the Versailles Treaty for Germany, the Trianon Treaty for Hungary, and the Sevres Treaty for Turkey in a similar systematic manner and forced them to sign without allowing for negotiation. The harsh terms of the Treaty of Versailles were among the reasons that triggered World War II, from which Germany emerged under even harsher conditions. The terms of the Treaty of Trianon, which left more than half of the Hungarian population outside the country's borders, could not be remedied by Hungary. So much so that, as far as we can see, the trauma of Trianon continues to live on in Hungarian literature. The only treaty that could be amended in this table was the Treaty of Sèvres, and the treaty that amended it was the Treaty of Lausanne. The symposium book you hold aims to examine this treaty from its legal aspects.
